Storage Baskets

Storage Baskets

Since early civilization, storage baskets have been used as one of the most common items. In the past, these storage baskets were woven by hand out of various vegetable fibers such as wicker, sea-grass and straw. However, baskets are also made with synthetic materials such as wire and plastic fibers or even porcupine quills!

To date, baskets are being used as vessels to store and carry everything from foodstuff to laundry and they are even considered as one of the most common decorations in many households. One such example is the common basket of fruits prominently displayed on many living room tables and kitchen counters. In addition, apart from varying greatly in design, the baskets used today vary greatly in purpose as well. Creel is one excellent example of the many types of baskets. Creels are storage baskets that originated from Europe and they are small baskets made of wicker.

This wicker basket is used mainly by anglers to hold their catch, acting as an evaporative cooler. Did you know that watertight baskets were also used by California Indians to cook soup in? Another type of this basket is undoubtedly one of the largest forms of baskets in the world, the hot air balloon basket which is used to transport humans in hot air balloons. This type of basket is typically made using rattan as it has proven to be a sufficiently light and durable material for balloon flight. The good thing about rattan is that they also come in varying sizes.

However, the most common use for baskets is storage. In the past, without coolers, freezers and fridges, baskets were widely used to store foodstuff as well as to transport them conveniently from one place to another. There is also something very rustic and charming about baskets that even florists use baskets as part of the flower arrangement baskets. Gift baskets also look more personalized when uniquely woven baskets are used to carry the gift items. Storage baskets can also be very decorative and can be feature furniture in the living room or anywhere for that matter. Storage baskets can come in different sizes and colors. You can even find a particular interesting piece of storage basket in the form of a nest of storage baskets, one inside another which makes for an attractive arrangement as an overall focal piece in the living room.

Storage baskets are common in many countries and they range from the basic basket weave to intricate patterns that it makes choosing one a pleasantly difficult choice. They come in various shapes ranging from square to oval and round and some baskets have fabric lining in them. You can also find restaurants that use baskets to store their cutlery as this makes it look more homely and rustic. Curiously, while mechanization has been a reality for various other industries, such a feat has not been yet possible for storage basket production. Nobody has been able to radically improve the earliest and most basic techniques of basket weaving. Even with the use of the latest technologies sanders and numerous assembly line processes, mass production of these storage baskets have proven to be an arduous task.
